Aiden Markram will lead South Africa’s charge for the first time in an ICC event after being named T20I captain, as the Proteas announce their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and the West Indies.
Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman, the squad’s two uncapped T20I players, have benefited from their outstanding performances in the recent SA20 tournament. Rickelton was the tournament’s top run-scorer for MI Cape Town, with 530 runs at an average of 58.88 and a strike rate of 173.77, while Baartman took 18 wickets in eight matches for defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Along with the youth, the Proteas have a strong batting core that includes Markram, De Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and the promising Tristan Stubbs.
Kagiso Rabada and Nortje will lead the pace battery, with Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee providing support, while the frontline spinners will be Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi.
Among the notable inclusions are Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock, who were recently removed from Cricket South Africa’s central contract list. Nortje has been out of international action since September 2023 due to a back injury, while De Kock has announced his retirement from ODIs after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, having already said goodbye to Test cricket in 2022.
South Africa’s squad boasts a mix of experience and youth, and they’ll aim to make a mark in the T20 World Cup. Keep an eye on these players as they battle it out on the global stage! 🏏🌍
